The news is fractured and if you keep the old mindset your toast. I hope a majority of you do not take this to heart because my income depends on eyeballs. So, what you're saying is this: If a woman who may have a political vendetta against someone. (let's say a county official) She accuses that official of rape just to spite him. The DA's office has an obligation to investigate the allegation, but has no other evidence aside from the accusation. All the local media hears about this and all but one group decides to hold back on the story because of the lack of evidence. That one group goes with the story without anything other than a claim of rape.
Now you have a situation where that one group may have just added fuel to a false accusation just because they wanted to claim they were the first to have it. Is that responsible? It's certainly not brave. You've just slurred someone's name because you were yanked around like a puppet.
So you are saying you want to not say anything until after the fact. Hell the public can get that info. Sometime you have to go further that what everybody else is reporting. A good reporter should be interviewing people before the cops. Hell I could be a reporter (recorder) by your standards. This is what pisses me off about all the media in our little town. Why is Beuamont spending millions on downtown when we all know it's not a tourist destination? Why is Thomas paid for the results he has gotten for the last several years?
